1... 2... 3... Shoe Inspection!

Take a moment, stop what you're doing right now, and check your shoes... I'll wait... go on, look at your shoes.

Seriously, look at your shoes. Are you scrolling and NOT looking at your shoes? Just do what you're told.

What shoes are you wearing? Heels? Loafers? Sandals? Flip Flops? Sneakers? Boots?

What condition are they in? New? Worn? Repaired?

Do they have gum on the bottom? Are you wearing inserts? Do they smell awful?


Do they look like this?
Whatever it is you're wearing ask yourself this: Have you inspected them? What I mean by that is: Do you know if these shoes are good for you?

Are you having back pain?
Bad ankles?
Sore feet?
Pinched toes?

If you're a female, chances are you're wearing some high heels that pinch your toes and make you stand on the ball of your foot looking like Barbie all day.

Great for nice legs... Great for the butt... Terrible for everything else.

So why is that so important?

Recently an Ohio woman is suing Sketchers for the new "Shape-Up" shoes she purchased, because after wearing them to "tone up" she got severe pain and ultimately a fractured femur. But we'll get to that in a bit...

In August I purchased some New Balance 1226 Women's Running Training Shoes and paid a hefty amount for them. New Balance maintains its business on providing shoes that have the "rollbar" as well as American made. The lady who helped me asked me questions about pain or what my needs were (starting the C25K running program). She watched me walk, I told her about my previous heel pain which turned out to be something called Plantar Fasciitis (which I had never heard of before). So she gave me some stability shoes (with a roll bar) and a high arch insert.

I wore these almost everyday putting on average 15 miles per week on them (that's about 360 miles). Most "running gurus" recommend replacing your shoes ever 300-500 miles.

Once I felt the pain in my shin I should have suspected.

Once I noticed that my feet were rolling to the outside of my foot (supination) I should have known better.

Immediately I thought I had a stress fractures (or shin splints) and the more and more the pain happened when I was running the more I was convinced it was a fracture. That my hopes and dreams of running a 5K were ruined. This was December (2 months ago).

I read. I read more and more. Blogs, websites, asked fellow running friends.

All of them said: Get new shoes.


Finally, after taking a break from running for a month (and some helpful "birthday" money to cover the cost) I walked into a local place called Varsity Sports.

Locally owned, plenty of recommendations, and a place that looks like they take pride in a good product and encouraging running.

I met up with Alex, brought my New Balances and showed her the inserts, the wear and tear, the problems I'm having.


She was helpful with all my endless questions and told me that what I once needed those New Balance shoes for, is now hurting me. She watched me walk, tried on multiple different shoes and we found a great fit. I ran in them this morning and immediately could tell a difference.

What's my point here?

Just like this lady in Ohio, I was being dumb. Now I don't know this woman. And I probably couldn't locate Ohio on a blank map (that's what Google is for), but I do know that from now on I'll never buy a pair of shoes, without first doing some research. Furthermore I wouldn't continue to wear them if they caused me pain, even if the promised price was Ryan Reynolds naked on my doorstep. well, i'd have to think about it at least.

I went on and on about my shin splint pain (via twitter, facebook, my blog), but not once did I do anything about it. It wasn't New Balances fault - it was mine. I was so close to going to the doctor and assuming my days of running were over. I jumped from one assumption to the other just as her ridiculous idea of suing Sketchers for not recognizing that these were causing her pain.

The average person takes about 3000-5000 steps a day. And if you're an exerciser, there's more. Your feet are carrying you the whole way. What are you wearing for those steps!


When I started my weight loss I never understood the phrase "listen to your body" but I do now! It means when something hurts or painful, there's something wrong - you need to fix it, fix it, fix it.


You can't just blindly go through life expecting great results when you aren't making intelligent decisions. You can quote me on that one.


If you're eating unhealthy food everyday, you will gain weight.


If you try a "fad diet" that promises 20lbs loss in a month, you will gain it back and more.


And if you complain about shin splints everyday, to anyone and everyone on the planet, only to ignore their advice of getting new shoes, and only then to find out that they were 100% correct, after you got the new shoes... then you better figure out a way to give a big fat apology.
