What's in Your Fridge?

It happens everyday... when I least expect it.

I'm at home...

Bored...

I walk into the kitchen...

And it stands there, coercing me...

Pleading without words or actions for me to come near...

"I'm cool on the inside, I have yummy food inside of me that you want to eat." it says.

Oh refrigerator, you fiend.

You stand there looming all big and white, tempting me with the goodies inside...

Just one peak into the fridge...

It's like Christmas Day each time I open it...

What surprises await for me inside the metal box of deliciousness...

I reach out my arm....

I open the door....

My eyes adjust to the internal lights (which is controlled by invisible penguins, I'll have you know)....

I look inside....

and I smile.

I smile because I've already made the choices to help myself in this type of situation. Has this ever happened to you? How do you deal with it? For me, I prepare. I plan. I make good choices at the grocery store/product market. So that when the fridge tempts me, I'm ready for it.

Let's take a look inside my fridge:

This is straight after a grocery/produce day and the fridge is stocked. First thing we see is yummy cantaloupes, strawberries, and watermelons being chilled and ready for the eating. These aare my "go to" foods when I get snacky, especially for something sweet. I'm not kidding when I say that I love watermelon and strawberries. I've been known to down an entire watermelon in a single sitting. ... shortly thereafter I'm running to the bathroom like a cheetah on speed.

Next we have some orange juice and some Diet Green Tea. I occasionally drink the OJ and maybe a cup or two of the Green Tea, but really these are for DubyaKid. We normally don't have sodas in our house (Dubya does occasionally but rarely.) DubyaKid usually drinks milk, OJ, apple juice, Diet Green Tea, or Water (occasionally some Sprite Zero). She loves OJ. This is the no pulp, calcium fortified kind and we go through a gallon a week usually.

But wait! I just said we don't drink sodas and the picture tells a different story. Ah, yes, the Sundrop cokes. One of my previous posts mentioned how I'm a Dungeons and Dragons nerd and unfortunately from our get-to-gethers we usually house leftover food. You will also see leftover energy drink and leftover beer. Those aren't ours. (And a pizza in the freezer)

Next we'll see a dozen eggs and white bowl to the left of it. Those are boiled eggs. I eat eggs almost everyday. Boiled egg whites during the week and usually scrambled during the weekend. I boiled a dozen at a time and keep them in the fridge. Usually my routine is to workout in the morning and then grab two to-go for the office. Lately I've been cutting up the egg whites and putting them in my instant grits. But i enjoy them just plain as well.

Next to that white bowl we see a low fat pound of ground beef and a low fat pound of ground turkey. Another constant in my house. This can be turned into my famous DubyaWife Low Fat Chili, or taco meat for taco night, or meatloaf, or hamburgers for Dubya to throw on the grill. Endless uses. And each one delicious, fast, and healthy!

Various other things we see in my fridge is pesto. DubyaKid uses pesto on her sandwiches instead of mayo. Some Turkey sausage for our Monday night Red Beans and Rice... it's just something we do in the South. Chobani Yogurt, a constant in the DubyaHouse. Romaine lettuce, I always keep a head or two around for sandwiches, quick salads, lettuce wraps with leftover meat. In the crisper are some hot dogs. Those are for DubyaDog. We don't eat that nasty sodium-filled processed meat... so we give it to the dog. Ha!

Also in the crisper is no shortage of CHEESE! We keep cheese in the house like it's going out of style. Sliced cheese. Shredded cheese. Block cheese. Specialty cheeses. We have many. I like it cause 1) cheese stays well. 2) It's a good late night snack (high fat) if you want to have a little something before bed. 3) It's good for guests. The downfall of cheese is portioning. And here is where I'm very careful. Cheese can be deceiving so use moderation! I'll admit I can go overboard with cheese but I don't deny it. I simply recognize the temptation and do the best I can. (Oh btw, we try to go low fat on some cheeses, but there's a definite taste difference when done. Some cheese, liked sliced cheese, I don't mind the low fat, others I'm very strict about getting the real stuff.)

In the bottom drawers on the left are all our veggies. Carrots in individual portion sizes which are convienent for any of us to just grab to snack on. Mushrooms. Squash. Onion. On the right are the fruits. Apples. Lemons. Sometimes oranges, grapefruits, grapes, cherries, nectarines, blueberries, blackberries. We love fruit.

Next let's take a look at the side shelf of our fridge...

Holy Condiments, Batman! We have our fair share of condiments in the Dubya house. I won't go into details on all of it but of course there's a few specific items. Skim Milk! A necessity! I've been known to throw in some Carnation Instant Breakfast packets in 2 cups of it or a bowl of Cheerios as a late night snack. You'll notice the Low Fat Miracle Whip which we don't use often, but good choice when needed. As for the rest, having a variety of condiments is good to add flavor to your food without adding fatty stuff. You'll notice there's one lone stick of butter sitting in the left cupboard. It's been there for a while. We don't use butter in the Dubya house. Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Pam spray.

Now let's check out the freezer:

Here's where I wish I had a huge freezer to store stuff. I'm lazy, I like to cook quick healthy meals. The frozen stuff is essential. We've got some frozen strawberries that I cut up in the Spring and saved for smoothies. Beef meatballs for spaghetti. LOTS of SteamFresh Vegetables. I stock up on these every time at the grocery store. They are quick, tasty, and an essential in our house. I think there's about 5 bags of the SteamFresh Brussel Sprouts. I love these little suckers. When I get hungry for something or need to up my veg for the day, I just pop a bag in there and go to town. They are quite filling. We've got turkey sausage links (DubyaKid favorite), some Lean Cuisine meals for when I need to grab a lunch for work and other various frozen veggies, frozen fruits items.

And there's the DubyaWife fridge. Small changes make a big difference. Don't let the fridge become a place you avoid, but a place you can rely on. Stock it with foods you love to eat and your body loves as well.
